Aircraft landing planning under uncertain conditions

Abstract Aircraft Landing Planning is challenging because the inherently limited capacity of airport runways causes bottlenecks. This type planning involves different stakeholders (e.g., airlines, air traffic services providers, authorities, and passengers) faces various uncertainties take-off time variability, or wind speeds). study, conducted in collaboration with European Organization for Safety Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL), proposes a mathematical formulation problem simulation framework that accounts uncertainties. We also propose solution methods: descent tabu search, as well mechanism guiding restarts, to diversify search process. These methods provide, our simulated environment, more effective stable solutions than popular first-come-first-served practice regarding three objective functions (namely, delay, fuel, landing sequence stability), which are considered lexicographically. Indeed, average delays fuel costs reduced by 50% 10%, respectively, at cost small number landing-sequence modifications, each flight repositioned an 0.5 times. Moreover, computations can be performed quickly, crucial re-optimization needs done online when information updated.
